Whiskey Taking Shots from all sides amid tariffs fight

BOB BATZ JR. / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette — Retaliatory tariffs are taking hard shots at American whiskey, which had been booming in popularity abroad, too.

From 2001 to 2017, American spirits exports to China grew almost 1,200 percent to $12.8 million in 2017, and nearly $9 million of that is whiskey, according to the Distilled Spirits Council, which worries that China’s 25 percent tariffs will harm not only U.S. whiskey makers but also farmers who supply them grain and others.

U.S. whiskey also has been hit with tariffs from the European Union, Canada and Mexico.
