Five Brothers and a Dad’s Hat

Punch Brothers

Dad’s Hat Rye Whiskey’s Punch Brothers Single Barrel Limited Release Available During Show at Union Transfer in Philadelphia

Punch Brothers, the Brooklyn quintet who are performing at Philadelphia’s Union Transfer on Monday, July 23rd, have selected a barrel of Dad’s Hat Pennsylvania Straight Rye Whiskey that has been bottled by Dad’s Hat Co-founders Herman Mihalich and John Cooper to celebrate the band’s 2018 summer tour and the release of their new album, All Ashore, out July 20th on Nonesuch Records.

Punch Brothers tasted samples from several barrels of Dad’s Hat whiskey from the Bristol, PA distillery before selecting this particular barrel. As their 2010 song “Rye Whiskey” says, “Rye Whiskey makes the band sound better, makes your baby cuter, makes itself sweeter, oh boy!” This lyrics appear on the label of the newest Dad’s Hat, limited release bottles. The 124 proof, cask strength straight rye whiskey, will be available during the Punch Brothers show at Union Transfer.

“The band says that they don’t believe their music would be possible to make without rye whiskey, and none of them are willing to test the validity of that belief,” joked Mihalich. “This is a delicious barrel of whiskey, and fans will now have a chance to test the band’s theory on whiskey and music.”

Punch Brothers are mandolinist Chris Thile, guitarist Chris Eldridge, bassist Paul Kowert, banjoist Noam Pikelny and violinist Gabe Witcher.

The Boston Globe recently said of the band, “Their uncanny ability to play with dynamics — not just contrasting quiet and loud but effortlessly shifting from one to the other—speaks to their ability to breathe together as a group. To call the Punch Brothers a well-oiled machine would imply that there is a drop of oil to be seen, when in fact they are staggeringly tight and clean.”

Single Barrel Straight Rye A Hit With Retailers & Restauranteurs Alike

BRISTOL, PA — Craft spirits aficionados have probably noticed the ever-growing popularity of single barrel straight whiskey, particularly over the last few years. But what is it, exactly, that makes this specially crafted expression so enticing to fans of craft whiskey?

The allure of these rare spirits is unique, both in the flavor and the singular quality of the carefully cultivated product.

Produced outside of a larger batch, the undiluted nature of single barrel whiskey delivers a bolder, more robust, taste. Each bottle, typically featuring a hand-written barreled-on-date, bottled-on-date and cask (aka barrel) number, is taken from an individual source and, therefore, boasts its own set of distinct characteristics.

“Single barrel whiskey provides an excellent opportunity to see a slightly different side to the more familiar expressions of many favorite brands. When retailers or restaurants buy single-barrel bottlings, it allows them to offer something truly unique which is not available anywhere else”, says Brian Freedman, a spirits expert for Forbes.com and Whisky Advocate contributor.

“The range of expressions embodied by Dad’s Hat’s single barrel, cask strength options is stunning, and a true testament to the company’s dedication to the craft of producing world-class rye.”

So when Dad’s Hat began making a single-barrel version of its renowned Pennsylvania Straight Rye Whiskey, it was no surprise it was an immediate hit with fans. Not only are retailers selecting Dad’s Hat’s Whiskey by the barrel to be on their shelves, but restauranteurs are now adding it to their menu as well.

Recently, people like Stephen Starr, the prominent Philadelphia-based eatery impresario, along with fellow restauranteur, Aimee Olexy (Talula’s Table and Talula’s Garden), visited the Bucks County distillery to hand-select a barrel of cask strength Dad’s Hat Single Barrel Straight Rye Whiskey for their new restaurant, The Love.

In fact, single-barrel produced bottles of Dad’s Hat has also sprung up at other restaurants and locations in Philadelphia and around the country, including Amis (two Philadelphia locations and Westport CT), Binny’s Beverage Depot (Chicago area spirits retailer), BevMo (Retailer with locations in AZ, CA, and Washington state), PA Fine Wine & Good Spirits Stores and Total Wine & More (locations nationwide).

Of course, they’re not the only ones raving about Dad’s Hat Single Barrel Straight Rye Whiskey.

“The range of expressions embodied by Dad’s Hat’s single barrel, cask strength options is stunning, and a true testament to the company’s dedication to the craft of producing world-class rye,” says Freedman.

Craft Spirits On the Map in Philly

As those who attended Philadelphia magazine’s Whiskey & Fine Spirits Festival last fall witnessed, Dad’s Hat is just one of many area distillers making big noise in the craft spirits world. Craft distilling has definitely come a long way since we started making our trademark rye whiskey in Bristol way back in 2012.

From Quakertown to Camden, now you can find burgeoning spirits artisans all over metro Philly, as can be seen with a great interactive map of area distilleries from Visit Philadelphia. See you out on the trail!
